Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

In 1987, Dr. Francine Shapiro accidentally stumbled upon the calming effects of side-to-side eye movements while encountering the painful feelings of her own personal problems.  This discovery would later lead her to be the founder of the most empirically and demonstratably effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other trauma-related problems.

EMDR AND SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES

In my 15+ years of clinical practice, I have yet to find a more useful tool than EMDR.  Over the years, quite literally, I have had the opportunity to treat trauma survivors in the hundreds and have been repeatedly amazed at my clients' abilities to become profoundly transformed in as few as 3-5 sessions.

Whether a single exposure or decades of exposure to trauma, my use of EMDR has proven itself to be invaluable in its efficacy and expediency.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR EMDR?

EMDR has been shown to be the most effective treatment for persons diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  Click here to learn more about PTSD.  Even if you don't meet the full diagnostic criteria for PTSD, EMDR can be very useful in the treatment of other issues which have roots in traumatic experiences such as:

  • fears and phobias
  • panic attacks
  • low self-esteem
  • interpersonal difficulties (issues with trust, abandonment, social anxiety, performance anxiety)
  • relationship endings (break-ups, bereavement)
